MTN Launches Remittances App
This development comes right after MTN’s Group CEO and President Rob Shuter told delegates at last month’s AfricaCom 2019 conference that the firm has a strategy to run its business across fintech and telco-specific fronts.
In a statement, MTN said that the mobile app was designed to facilitate money and airtime transfers from Europe to Africa as well as parts of the Middle East.
In addition, the MTN Homeland app allows for remittances from Europe to Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon, Rwanda, Ghana, Uganda and Guinea Conakry, while airtime can be sent to Benin, Afghanistan, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Rwanda, Guinea Conakry, Liberia, South Africa, Uganda, Swaziland, Zambia and Yemen.
Commenting on MTN’s new offering, Shuter said that the value of remittances from the diaspora far exceeds foreign direct investment in the African continent. He added that MTN Homeland is one more example of how MTN utilises fintech to expand its reach while driving meaningful impact to millions.
MTN has approximately 32 million 30-day active mobile money subscribers.
