Tanzania: Telcos Tigo And Zantel To Officially Merge

Two Millicom-owned companies have announced that they will officially merge. Zanzibar Telecom Public Limited Company (Zantel) revealed the completion of an amalgamation with its sister entity MIC Tanzania Public Limited Company (Tigo).

Now that Millicom Tanzania, also known as Tigo, has received approval from the local antitrust authorities to merge with Zantel, the closing will see both telcos combine their operations in the mainland and Zanzibar.

This move has been in the making for a while now. Earlier this year, Millicom informed Tanzania’s Fair Competition Commission (FCC) that it intended to increase its stake in Zantel from 85.0 percent to 99.9 percent by acquiring a stake from Zanzibar’s government.

The partners say that the combined business will bring together the strengths of Tigo and Zantel to better serve customers in Zanzibar and the mainland.
They added that the merged group would offer improved coverage and better service to customers in both rural and urban Tanzania, enabling greater access to communication solutions for businesses and mobile financial services to Zantel and Tigo customers.

Zantel and Tigo assured subscribers that SIM cards and mobile numbers would not change and that there would be no interruption to the customer experience on both networks during this integration process.
