Airtel Africa Joins Forces With Mastercard In Mobile Money Deal
Airtel Africa, a leading provider of telecoms and mobile money services, has announced a collaboration with Mastercard, the giant technology company in the worldwide payments industry, that will give more than100 million Airtel Africa cellphone users in 14 African countries access to Mastercard’s global network.
The Mastercard virtual card will allow Airtel Money service customers to make payments to local and global online services that accept Mastercard cards, while at the same time ensuring that the customer’s financial data remains private and secure.
Also, Airtel Money’s customers will get the option to make in-person payments at outlets using quick response (QR) codes. This means payments will be made using an Airtel cellphone by scanning the QR code that is displayed at checkout, or by entering a unique merchant identifier, at any place worldwide where the Mastercard QR is accepted.
There are currently over one million merchant locations throughout Africa that accept Mastercard’s QR payments.
Airtel Money said that its customers would also benefit from the competitive pricing and preferential exchange rates for their international payments, and gain unlimited access to other domestically relevant user functions, including bill payments and value-added services like cash management solutions.
