Nigeria: 9Mobile Gains Large Number Of New Subscribers From Big Operators

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has released the telecom industry porting activities for quarter two of 2019, indicating that the country’s 4th telco, 9Mobile is gaining popularity rapidly with the highest number of subscribers porting into its network during the quarter.

9Mobile was also the frontrunner in quarter one, gaining more subscribers from the country’s bigger networks. According to NBS, the telecoms operator which has soldiered on through the worst times from a $1.2 billion loan debacle to losing its primary investor and partner Etisalat of UAE, managed to accumulate a staggering 19,369 subscribers through porting activities in the quarter while only 4,900 subscribers left its network.

According to the report, 9Mobile came in first place at the end of the quarter with a total of 19,369 subscribers porting to its network while losing only 4,900 of its subscribers to other networks.

It was followed by MTN which accumulated 7,560 new subscribers while losing 3,062. Also, Glo grew by 1,884 subscribers and lost 9,301. Airtel gained 1,355 subscribers and lost 2,870.

The stats show that while 9Mobile and MTN gained subscribers at the end of June 2019, through porting activities, Globacom and Airtel lost subscribers.
