Rwanda Premier Football League Takes A Knock As Azam TV Cancels Sponsorship Deal

Recent reports have revealed that Azam TV has decided to end its sponsorship of the Rwanda Premier Football League, a revelation that came as a surprise and a massive blow to the League.

In 2014 Azam TV had entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Rwanda’s local Football Association (FERWAFA) as a potential sponsor offering a total sponsorship of $2.35million for five years. The sponsorship agreement also included all the broadcasting rights for the Premier League games. The agreement was expected to be renewed when it expires next year.

However, in a letter sent to the local football body FERWAFA, Azam TV told the local football body that they would no longer be Rwanda’s football league sponsors starting from 21 August 2019.

Sources say that the reason for this sudden change of heart is the sponsorship deal between the defending champions Rayon Sports and SKOL the beer company.

FERWAFA admitted that they received a letter from Azam TV informing them that they were pulling out of the deal which was meant to expire next year and the League would no longer be called the Azam Rwanda Premier Football League.

The Secretary-General of FERWAFA, Regis Uwayezu informed the clubs that they should be ready to cope with the situation and that negotiations were underway on all fronts to reinstate the Azam TV sponsorship deal.

This is the second time that a leading sponsor has cancelled its dealings with the Rwanda Premier League. The previous sponsor, Bralirwa PLC, ditched the League because of the jersey sponsorship signed between SKOL and Rayon Sports. The latest loss of primary sponsorship is believed to have added on to the problems faced by FERWAFA.
