Sipromad Acquires Pan-African Channel Africanews For $20Million

The pan-African channel Africanews that was previously owned by Euronews NBC has been bought by the Malagasy Group Sipromad for close to 20 million US Dollars.

Created in 2016 by the French group Euronews NBC, pan-African television Africanews is a multilingual news service that has its headquarters in Pointe-Noire, in the Republic of the Congo.

Africanews has a newsroom that has approximately 30 journalists and a team of technical staff of around 55. The news channel now has a new owner. Sipromad said that this news would probably be made official near the end of July 2019.

The acquisition is a critical part of a strategy to internationalise the activities of the Malagasy Group that is led by businessman Ylias Akbaraly. Last year, Sipromad bought Thomson Broadcast, a company that was known for specialising in software and audiovisual transmission equipment amongst other things.

Abu Dhabi is rumoured to have been selected as the home of new headquarters of Africanews.

The Emirate of the Gulf is an important place for the media where many international audiovisual companies have over the years established themselves to benefit from the city’s advanced infrastructures.
