Showmax Takes On SuperSport By Live Streaming Sports Content
The MultiChoice Group's subscription video-on-demand service (SVOD) Showmax has announced that it has started live-streaming sports content that until now had only been available on its DStv satellite pay-TV service and on DStv Now Catch Up, as part of a trial run.
With the live-streaming of sports, Showmax will now be giving SuperSport some direct competition.
It's similar to how M-Net's content and the exclusivity of its premium shows have been diluted by MultiChoice through making premium American series available on Showmax long before it gets broadcast on M-Net.
Showmax, however, says that it does not currently have any plans to offer full bouquets of sports content but will definitely be testing many different types of content on the service over time.
Showmax is now providing certain subscribers with the option to watch sports on its streaming platform as part of a Beta test trial run, including live sports broadcasts and other pre-recorded sports content that can be found under the "Sport" horizontal on the navigation bar.
This sports content includes the matches that feature the South African cricket team during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, highlights programming, SuperSport discussion and magazine shows, the SuperSport Rugby challenge and selected live professional and amateur events. Showmax will also broadcast sport-related films and documentaries.
