StarTimes Secures Broadcast Rights For Copa América Games In Sub-Saharan Africa

The Pan-African pay-TV operator StarTimes has acquired broadcast rights to the forthcoming edition of the Copa América national team football tournament.

The Nigerian Xpress newspaper has reported that StarTimes will now hold exclusive rights to broadcast the tournament all across sub-Saharan Africa. Coverage of the games will be shown on its five sports channels and also on the StarTimes ON streaming platform.

The broadcaster holds exclusive English-language rights on all platforms, and in addition, holds non-exclusive rights in the Portuguese and French-speaking markets.

The 2019 Copa América will be taking place from June 14th to July 7th in Brazil. The ten participating South American teams will be joined by various invitational teams from different nations, including Japan and Qatar.

The deal is yet another addition to StarTimes’ rapidly-growing football-rights portfolio. Last month, the broadcaster secured rights to the final of Spain’s Copa del Rey, while in November last year, it renewed a rights contract for the Coppa Italia in French, English, Portuguese and other indigenous languages.

StarTimes has also received a number of other football properties in recent months, benefitting and capitalising on Kwesé TV’s financial difficulties.
