MTN Rolls Out “World-First” WhatsApp Recharging Channel

MTN has introduced a WhatsApp channel which allows customers to purchase data or airtime, which it has described as an exclusive world-first.

The function is called MTN Chat. Customers will be able to also receive notifications and check their account balances through WhatsApp.

MTN SA’s Executive for Consumer Business, Mapula Bodibe said that MTN Chat was designed to help MTN subscribers seamlessly and directly manage their accounts on a convenient and secure and platform they are already familiar with.

The mobile operator added that MTN Chat would be expanded soon to include additional services such as customer support and the management of customer accounts, upgrades, balance notifications, and customised deals.

MTN added that it hopes to incorporate more instant messaging channels such as Facebook Messenger down the line.

The platform has been made available to prepaid and postpaid users and will require a one-time registration process in order to be activated.
MTN announced that registered MTN Chat subscribers would also enjoy more value with an exclusive discounted offer when recharging data via MTN Chat.

MTN South Africa said that it had partnered with Clickatell to launch the new channel.
