Showmax Releases Concrete Viewership Number For The First Time

MultiChoice's video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming service, Showmax, publicised its first concrete viewership number when it announced that Tali's Wedding Diary had just topped 1 million views. The streaming service then hinted that a second season for the South African mockumentary series was possibly in the works.

Previously, Showmax had made many viewership claims without divulging numbers and without providing ratings information and viewership figures after making those claims.

The previous non-disclosure had left the South African and broader TV industry unable to gauge what is popular with South African viewers, what shows they are watching, and how viewers were watching these shows.

At the recent 13th South African Film and Television Awards in South Africa’s Sun City, Tali's Wedding Diary won 5 Golden Horn trophies, the first winning for Showmax and the first victory for any streaming service at the Saftas.

Tali’s Wedding Diary received the awards for Best Comedy, Best Actress, Best Directing, Best Cinematography and for Best Editing. The show got the most awards in the 13th Saftas' comedy category.

The comedy mockumentary follows Tali, a stuck-up Johannesburg princess who moves to Cape Town and is in the process of planning her wedding to her estate-agent fiance Darren. The series was inspired by its creator’s real-life events.


Showmax debuted Tali's Wedding Diary in December 2017, which means it took over a year for the show to reach 1 million views.

It's not yet clear whether or not Tali's Wedding Diary will be renewed for a second season but its producers, after the Saftas win, said that they hoped this recognition would allow them to do even better in their next chapter.
