Showmax Plans To Invest In More Original Content In South Africa After MultiChoice JSE Listing
Naspers announced late last year that it would list the “Video Entertainment” business separately and name it MultiChoice Group. The MultiChoice Group includes MultiChoice Africa, MultiChoice South Africa and Irdeto.
The Video Entertainment CEO Imtiaz Patel had said at the time that the listing and unbundling of the MultiChoice Group was intended to create a leading entertainment entity that is cash generative and profitable.
One of the key components of the MultiChoice Group is Showmax, South Africa’s Netflix competitor.
Third-party data has revealed that Showmax and Netflix are the joint leaders of the South African streaming scene, and both VOD providers have seen much growth since their respective introductions into the country.
Showmax shared with MyBroadband that since its 2015 inception it has not stopped seeing year-on-year subscriber growth.
With its parent company preparing to list on the JSE, Showmax is likely to benefit substantially in terms of gaining more subscribers and increasing its catalogue of original content.
The company stated that while it didn’t want to make predictions about the potential impact on its subscriber base, it confirmed that it definitely would be ramping up its content offering.
Showmax rehashed that it had launched its first Showmax Original drama – The Girl From St Agnes – earlier this month, and was looking forward to the launch of its third original – Trippin With Skhumba – premiering later this month.
Showmax confirmed that there is more original content in the pipeline for later this year.
The video streaming company also added that it had recently been adding more exclusive shows and more content that was ‘Express from the US’ such as Siren, Vikings and The Magicians. Showmax declared that it was also involved in collaborations such as the Comedy Central Roast of AKA – the uncensored version will be aired on Showmax on 12 March.
