ICASA - SA Communications Regulator - Say No To E.TV’s Prime Time News Move

E.tv’s plans to move news out of primetime have been halted after South Africa's communications regulator, ICASA denied their request to have their licensing conditions changed.

ICASA rejected the plans because such a move would not be in public’s interest since primetime is when most South Africans are available to watch the news.

E.tv applied for the change in 2016, at the time they cited the falling ratings for primetime TV news as the reason for the modification. The COO of eMedia Investments, Mark Rosin, said that it no longer made sense for e.tv to offer TV news during the primetime slots.

In a statement, e.tv said it was disappointed with the decision and that they had hoped that the change would allow them more flexibility for them to better cater to their audience’s needs.
