MultiChoice's Showmax To Launch Its First Local Travel-Comedy Show ‘Trippin’ With Skhumba’

The South African streaming service, Showmax has recently announced that its original show ‘Trippin’ With Skhumba’ is in production and will soon be available to subscribers.

‘Trippin’ With Skhumba’ is Showmax’s third original show after ‘The Girl from St Agnes’ and ‘Tali’s Wedding Diary’.

In each 30-minute episode, comedian Skhumba Hlophe and fellow South African comedians will take viewers on a journey to their respective hometowns and explore places with a touch of local humour.

Commenting on the production, Skhumba said that as much as South African comedians are loved, the public had only been exposed to what they do on stage as opposed to their colourful backgrounds. He explained that this was the reason why he wanted to use Trippin’ With Skhumba, to dig deeper into their lives and where they grew up, which is more information than what he could ever get out of them by doing a standard interview on his radio show on Kaya FM.

Showmax emphasised that the show would display places that don’t feature on any tourism brochures and stories that would never make it to authorised biographies.

The first season’s guests are Celeste Ntuli who is from Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, Siya Seya from Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth, and Salesman from Pretoria. Also featured as guests in the first season will be Mashabela Galane from Moletjie in Limpopo, Tumi Morake who is from Bloemfontein, and Schalk Bezuidenhout from Kempton Park, Gauteng.

The travel-comedy show’s Director, Vincent Moloi declared that the show is real and that it would represent the ultimate exploration of South Africa’s humour in an honest and truthful manner. Moloi added that Trippin’ With Skhumba has an authentic texture and would have the audience in stitches.

The first season will wrap up with an hour-long stand-up special, featuring Skhumba and all his guests, as well as one new comedian featured from each hometown visited.

The show will debut on 28 February 2019 on Showmax, and a new episode will be available every Thursday after that.
