Showmax Prepares To Roll Out New Original Show
The Girl from St. Agnes is the streaming service’s debut original scripted drama which will be done in collaboration with Quizzical Pictures who were responsible for the local hit film iNumber number.
The Head of Content for MultiChoice’s Connected Video division, Candice Fangueiro said that the very first Showmax Original, Tali’s Wedding Diary, had broken internal viewing records and given Showmax clear proof that people are hungry for local stories that are told well.
Fangueiro said that this second original production would take a completely different direction – from a light-hearted comedy to something that deals with some of the most challenging issues facing today’s society. She further declared that the thread that holds these two productions together, and also holds all of the other Showmax Originals currently in the pipeline together, is Showmax’s aim to be the provider of robust, quirky and sometimes edgy local stories that the viewers wouldn’t find anywhere else.
The Connected Video unit is home to both Showmax and DStv Now.
According to Variety, the series is about a mysterious death at an upper-class boarding school which sets off a search for answers. In the search for the truth, many secrets from the past come to the surface.
The Producer, Harriet Gavshon said that this series is a universal story and that it would resonate with a global audience.
Gavshon commented on the themes explored in the production and said that it deals with teenage sexuality, identity and misogyny.
Filming for the 8 episode series is reported to have kicked off on 1 October.
It is being filmed in the town of Ixopo in the Midlands and also at various locations in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Girl from St Agnes is scheduled for release in January 2019 on Showmax.
