South Africans Choose Showmax Over Netflix
The finding was reported in the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa products, and brands report for October 2018, focusing specifically on services in South Africa.
3,154 people took the survey between January and June 2018, with 70% of the participants in metros, 15% in rural areas and 15% in urban areas. The split was then re-weighted to the overall population of South Africa (41%, 28%, and 31%, respectively).
The country’s Socio-Economic Measure (SEM) groups were also differentiated in the report.
When it comes to which video streaming service is nearest and dearest to the hearts of South Africans Showmax appears to be a sure winner over Netflix.
The streaming section of the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa products and brands report for October 2018 declares that Showmax is more popular than Netflix in South Africa in the time measured.
When respondents were asked which video streaming services they had used in the past week, 24% of users said that had watched YouTube, 5% said they had watched Showmax, and 4% admitted to watching Netflix.
The next question that the participants were asked was which video streaming services they used most often.
87% of the people responded that they watched YouTube most often, 6% selected Showmax as their regular go-to video streaming choice, and 5% of the respondents answered that Netflix was the one they watched most regularly.
The report went on to further analyse the use of streaming services among the different Socio-Economic Measure groups.
Respondents were separated into “supergroups”, ranging from 1 – the lowest – to 5 – the highest.
The results showed that Showmax is more popular than Netflix in groups 1 and 2, while Netflix seemed to be more popular in groups 3, 4, and 5.
