South Africa: SABC1’s Uzalo Breaks Ratings Records

South Africa and SABC1’s most-watched TV show, Uzalo has broken records with the second episode of its recent two-part wedding storyline that was watched by 10.2 million viewers - a new record-high for South African television.

Although Uzalo was already the leading television drama in South Africa, it beat its record on 25 September by reaching a combined 10 251 231 viewers for the dramatic two-part wedding special.

The last time South Africa witnessed similarly massive viewing numbers was for the opening match between South Africa and Mexico of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa on 11 June 2010.

Ironically, while Uzalo is currently the SABC's biggest show, it is one of the shows that the SABC struggles to pay. The payment situation got so bad that Stained Glass Pictures shut down production on the popular drama for a week early last month.
Uzalo’s executive producer, Mmamitse Thibedi says the cast and crew of Uzalo are thrilled and grateful to have achieved such a milestone. She adds that she and her team are committed to continuing on this upward trend going forward.

SABC1’s commissioning editor,  Fabian Rainers said that Uzalo consistently portrays storylines that society can relate to and that the storylines are authentic and make a real impact on the viewers.

The SABC released a statement saying it is delighted with the performance of one of its leading television programmes, Uzalo.
