Egypt To Challenge CAF Over Sale Of Broadcasting Rights To Lagardere Sports

Egyptian Competitions Authorities has filed a violation charge against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) relating to the granting of football broadcasting rights in Africa

The president of CAF, Mr Issa Hayatou is being accused of using his position to grant sole broadcasting rights to Lagardere Sports without giving other companies a chance to prospect for the right. Lagardere Sports was awarded Broadcasting rights for 12 years starting from 2017 till 2028. These rights cover a global reach and are not restricted to Egypt and Africa only. It includes both satellite broadcast and webcasting.

And according to the Egyptian authorities, this is in direct violation of the rules of free and fair competition under their Protection of Competition Act.

To this effect, the Egyptian competition authorities are looking at ways to effectively nullify the contract between CAF's Hayatou and Lagardere.
