Kenya: StarTimes To Ramp Up Free Digital TV Provisioning To Rural Africa

StarTimes - the Chinese Pay TV company - has confirmed that it is driving forward its commitment to provide free digital TV to rural Africa. The company had announced, a few months ago, that it was setting up, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, a project to connect more than 10,000 African villages with "free" digital television services. The stated objective of the project is to bridge the vast digital divide that has left huge parts of rural Africa with little or no access to digital television.

Speaking at the launch of the Kenyan leg of the roll-out, Mr Japheth Akhulia, the Director of Brand Marketing and Public Relations of StarTimes Media Kenya said the roll-out in the Kajiado County of Kenya stems from the success of the initial pilot in the area.

StarTimes is hoping to work with more African Governments to ensure that this project is delivered in many more African nation. They have already provided part of this project in Nigeria.
