SABC To Add 'Viewer Discretion Warning' To Shows With 'Suggestive Sex' Content

The South African Broadcasting Complaints Commission (BCCSA) has ordered that the country's public broadcasters SABC to consider adding a "Viewer Discretion Advised" notification to some of their shows and programmes with suggestive sexual content shown on TV before the "watershed period'.

This instruction has been issued following an avalanche of complaints by members of the viewing public over what was deemed overtly and inappropriate sex scenes during the SABC1 soap opera - Generations. SABC broadcast Generations weekdays at 8.00pm on SABC1 with an omnibus on Sunday at 9.00am.

While the BCCSA agreed that the show had pushed the boundary,  it did not, however, breach any provisions of the Code of Conduct. It does, however, need to carry a warning on the content it broadcasts if they contain inappropriate sexual-related material before the 9.00pm watershed period.
