Nigeria Not Tied To June 2017 Digital TV Switchover; Needs 32 Million Set-Top Boxes - NBC

The National Broadcasting Commission of Nigeria (NBC); the body responsible for implementing the country's migration from analogue to digital broadcasting has conceded it might not achieve the self-imposed switchover deadline on 17th June 2017.

According to a statement from the Director General of the organisation, Mallam Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, the plan will now be to stagger the switchover in stages, completing the process on a state by state basis.

Mr Ishaq Modibbo Kawu also confirmed that Nigeria would require an estimated 32 million Set-Top boxes for it to complete the national digital migration.

According to reports, the NBC have already committed to securing 8 million units of these Set-Top boxes, which according to Kawu's calculations will cost the Nigerian treasury a princely sum of US Dollars 26 Million.
