NBC Urges Nigeria’s Broadcasters To Practice Responsible Conflict Reporting

National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has urged Nigeria’s broadcasters to be mindful of the content they deliver members of the public and the manner in which the content is delivered, as the country is currently going through some frightening security challenges.

Mallam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, the Director-General of NBC, who gave the instruction recently, said that the security situation was reflected in the content of shows and news reports on TV and radio, adding that the media needed to report on sensitive issues with a great sense of professionalism and responsibility.

He pointed out that the media still possessed the right to freely operate in a democratic environment, which is also backed up entirely by the Nigerian Broadcasting Code.

Kawu said that broadcasting organisations had to recognise that even though they exercise freedom of expression, it is as agents of society, not for personal rights, privileges or to push their own agendas.

The Director-General who was speaking at the recent 2019 National Broadcasting Summit in Calabar, Cross River State, rebuked the manner in which broadcasters had conditioned, profiled and deepened prejudices and fear in the context of Nigeria’s current security challenges.
